Insure Before You Go

For that once in a lifetime trip there is no doubt you should insure before you go. A million questions start to surface when it comes to selecting the right travel insurance. Every adventure does not require coverage, but experts consider it a necessity for certain excursions. Well-known international traveller Rick Steves reminds everyone that extensive research is the key to finding comprehensive, reasonably priced coverage.

Some of the issues covered by policies include:

Accidental death
Compensation is provided in the event of accidental death or dismemberment.

Baggage
In addition to compensation for lost or stolen luggage, reimbursement is provided for items re-purchased during the trip.

Cancellations/interruptions
Reimbursement is provided when a trip must be cancelled due to death or illness. Sometimes an option is available to cover sudden unemployment. Very specific requirements must be met for coverage.

Rental car damage
Covers vehicle in the event of theft or damage.

Emergency medical and dental
This is particularly helpful in events where traditional medical insurance is not accepted. Customer service is invaluable in helping travellers find medical care in remote or exotic locations. Medical evacuation is an option commonly recommended to travellers in remote locations.

Now that you know what is being offered, obtain the best policy for your trip with a little legwork.

Ask friends and family for suggestions. Talk to other frequent travellers to see who provides their coverage and see if they were satisfied with the service.

Search the internet. Many reputable companies have an online presence with easy-to-use policy quote generators. Use the feature to gather estimates on the cost of your policy. Smaller companies sometimes have the backing of international insurers, allowing them to provide first-class coverage for a reasonable rate.

Read the fine print to make sure your trip is covered. Some companies do not cover high-risk activities like sky diving or snorkelling. Others do not cover trips to high risk locations, including countries known for high incidents of terrorism. Ask if this is not clearly spelled out.

Know what is not included. Travel for medical procedures or cosmetic surgery are typically not covered under travel insurance. Lately, more insurers are emphasizing that social diseases contracted during a trip are not eligible for reimbursement under travellers insurance. Depending on the company, complications that arise from pre-existing conditions are not covered.

Get multiple quotes. It is easy to go with the first policy thrown your way, but it may not be the best. Receive a minimum of three quotes before making a final decision. Remember that cheaper may not always mean better, so read closely to see if the cheaper policy supplies comprehensive coverage.
